Help Support Literacy!
It’s that time of year again. I’m writing another novel, in 3 days (no, that’s not a typo) on a beautiful weekend in July.
Yep, I am giving up one of the few summer weekends we have to spend 72 hours writing an entire novel from scratch along with 31 other crazy, er, I mean dedicated souls doing the same thing.
Why, you ask?
The Muskoka Novel Marathon is an annual fundraiser for YMCA Muskoka’s adult literacy programs. The Y offers free instruction in reading, writing, math, computer skills, life skills and English as a second language, helping about 200 people per year. And more people need this than you might think. According to Y statistics, 40% of Canadians struggle with basic reading and writing.
So in addition to getting to hang out with a bunch of other writerly types who will also be enduring sleep deprivation, occasional technical difficulties and characters who won’t do what we want them to do, I’ll be raising funds for this amazing organization.
Please help me to support literacy in Muskoka. Even a toonie makes a difference, but since our goal is to raise $10,000 this year (that’s more than $300 per writer) I’m hoping you’ll be able to spare a bit more.
